Koperattiva Rurali Manikata was set up in the summer of 2007 by a group of farmers and residents of Manikataa, a small town in Malta. Their general aim was to put forward projects which would help to safeguard the natural, historical and socio-economic environment of the place. Today the cooperative is working on four different projects, including the running of the Rural Heritage Trail, the restoration of the historic farmstead Razzetttal-Qasam, the restoration of the Armoury and the promotion of local products and of typical food. The cooperative is made up of 26 members and its mission is to help the local farmers, teach agriculture and botany and explain the continuous efforts to protect the area from the developments which can spoil or endanger the work of the local farmers.
It is located in a quiet rural area and we have developed a Rural Heritage Trail. Koperattiva Rurali Manikata has been offering a programme of educational visits for students and adults along the Manikata Rural Heritage Trail. Here they are able to get a taste of rural life in a place where nature is always at hand. Along the trail, visitors are able to see and feed animals, walk along the fields, see historical and archaeological remains, taste some fresh bread and fruit, and also buy some typical, local food products produced by the cooperative.
How we promote cooperatives’ values and culture
On our visits we focus on explaining the aims of our cooperative, which are to help the local farmers, teach agriculture and botany and explain our continuous efforts to protect the area from the developments which can spoil or endanger the work of the local farmers.
