LA CIUTAT INVISIBLE SCCL

"La Ciutat Invisible" is a cooperative born in 2005 in Barcelona, Catalonia. There are 5 working-associates and 2 more collaborators. The average age of our members is 36 years, and there are four male members and three women. Our main economic activity consists in managing a specialized library, where you can find contents related to cooperativism, sociology, philosophy, art, feminism and gender contents, literature, health, ecology and sustainability, and other sections. The cooperative also offers graphic and corporate design services, as well as consultancy and advisory services to groups of people wanting to start cooperative enterprises, including accountant and legal support. Since 2009, La Ciutat Invisible is also active in the area of investigation, research and development of contents and projects related to social economy. Nowadays we are managing three diferent projects, one whith Barcelona’s city council aimed at developing a pioneer facility which has to promote the creation of new cooperatives and other social enterprises. The second one is a research on the history of the cooperative movement in the early 20th century in Poble Nou, one of the most important neighbourhoods in Catalonia in this matter, and the last project we are managing is building a metropolitan net linking a great amount of different cooperatives, consumers associations, and other social projects, in the city of Barcelona."
Tourism Attractiveness
In 2010 La Ciutat Invisible decided to pursue one of our strategies of local development related to the social economy through the explanation of the rich cooperative history of most of the neighborhoods in Barcelona. We first started studying the Sants story, and in the following years we made research in all the other neighborhoods too. This allowed us to prepare and manage what we call routes.coop, since 2011. In these three years we have organized more than fifty routes in seven different areas of Barcelona, each of which had more than 25 participants. We have also arranged routes with high-schools and other institutions, so we can say that the age range is from 12 untill 99 years old. We do always provide participants to the route with materials related to the history and the local cooperative movement. Moreover we try to complete all the routes with a visit to some actual cooperative projects, in order to show that coop movement is not just history, but there is a current coop ongoing reality all around. According to our statistics, in the last years more than twelve hundred people joined one or more routes. For example, in 2012, during the celebration of the International Year of the Cooperatives, we managed four big routes with the associates of the Catalan Cooperative Federation, three walking and one by bus, which more than 250 visitors joined. In 2014 we have guided 29 routes.
How we promote cooperatives’ values and culture
One of the main operating principle of La Ciutat Invisible is the promotion of the cooperative values, methodologies and experiences. During the last ten years we have developed a lot of different projects in this field, like the cooperative routes, research in coops history, educational contents for seminars and conferences. We have also participated in different university masters as teachers and developed specific services for groups of people who want to set up a new cooperative, offering them support in the organization, skills and values, as well as in economic matters. Moreover we participate in coop organizations, such as the Worker Cooperative Federations (FCTC), the Social Economy Net (XES) or Coop57, a financial services cooperative, but also in other associations inspired to the values of democracy, participation and cooperation.
